Mister Sunday at Industry City: Brooklyn’s Premiere Daytime Dance Party

Something magical is happening in Brooklyn. There is a vibrancy, energy and new life breathing between it’s tree-lined streets everyday.  Amid the Johnny pumps and townhouses, life-long locals and transplants come together to bask in the beauty that Brooklyn harmonizes, in a way never before orchestrated. The magic is part of Brooklyn’s charm and adds to her allure.

Mister Sunday is a weekly, daytime, outdoor dance party down in Industry City (west of Greenwood Heights & Sunset Park) that starts at 3:00pm and goes until 9:00pm (that’s just when the music stops, people still linger for a bit.) It’s $15 at the door, or $10 in advance when you buy tickets from their website. The party is hosted by Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin, who are also the DJ’s spinning hot beats.

The rules of the dance floor are: no cell phones, no smoking and to generally respect others and have fun. They want people to really be in the moment when dancing and respect that we all came out to have a good time.

A gold bull upon entering the space

The crowd is good-looking, young, upwardly mobile, comprised of urban professionals and artsy types, mostly local Brooklynites – and some city folk. I’d venture that the age range is about 28 – 48, with a concentration of folks in their early 30′s and 40′s. It’s definitely a mature, respectable and handsome crowd.

I broke one rule, and snapped a shot of the DJ’s. This is Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter. They were SO feeling the music and feeding off the crowd. It was magic.

I took a moment to breathe and take it all in. This is looking up.

Good times

Mister Sunday was a fantastic way to end the weekend. I let my hair down, let loose and danced the day away amidst the glow of the evening and glimmering sweaty bodies that came together to cavort and be lighthearted, with a receptivity of oneness.
